After John McCain named Sarah Palin as his running mate, he was just as surprised as everyone else.

Country Worst
October 11, 2008

Though he pledged country first
He delivered the worst

And the G.O.P. netted
A vixen unvetted ‒

She’s a demagogue ditz
Who gives Democrats fits.

Then with Katie she stumbled
And the right was soon humbled.

She was savvy on shootin’
But so foolish on Putin.

Would the VP debate
Serve to seal her fate?

With the bar set so low
Sarah put on a show.

With a wink, she said “Joe,”
To unsettle her foe

But Joe Biden excelled
And the worries were quelled.

Yet her populist shtick
For the right did the trick.

She avoided disgrace
And she stayed in the race.

But her new role was vicious —
An attack dog malicious.

She would rally the base,
And remind them of race

And then stir up their hate
With her Horton-type bait.

When the Rove-ites uncorked her
The left should’ve borked her!

Yet we all thought McCain
Would have utter disdain
For a gutter campaign
That would sputter and wane.

Does John rue his rash bet
On an unknown brunette?

He unleashed a new force
Whom he’d never endorse

But she won’t go away
And she’ll never obey
The top G.O.P. brass
With her populist sass.

She is basking in fame —
She’s quite good at this game.

She was John McCain’s tool
But she’s nobody’s fool.
